How to Use the GPA Calculator
Convert grades between the US 4.0, UK Honours, European ECTS, and Chinese 100-point scales in four steps. The tool weights every course by its credit hours so your converted GPA reflects your real transcript.
- Pick your original grading system (the one your transcript uses) under From System.
- Pick the target grading system you want to convert to under To System.
- Enter each course's grade and credit hours. Add as many courses as you need with + Add Course.
- Read your converted GPA, total credits, and letter grade in the Result panel. A per-course breakdown shows how each grade was mapped.
How Grade Conversion Works
Every grading system has a different pass line and a different top score: a US 1.0 is the pass mark while 4.0 is the max; a UK pass is 35% and the max is 100%; a Chinese pass is 60 out of 100. A naive percentage would treat these as the same scale, which is why a 70% in the UK (a First Class) is excellent but a 70% in China (a C) is mediocre.
This calculator maps every system onto a common Normalized Pass Index (NPI) from 0 to 100, where 0 is the pass line and 100 is the top grade, then projects that index onto the target system. Each course is weighted by its credit hours before the final GPA is computed.
Grading System Reference
| System | Pass | Top | Scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| US 4.0 | 1.0 (D) | 4.0 (A+) | 0.0โ4.0 |
| UK Honours | 35% | 100% | 0โ100% |
| ECTS | E | A | AโF |
| Chinese | 60 | 100 | 0โ100 |
How ECTS to GPA Conversion Works
ECTS uses ordinal letters A through F, where A is excellent and E is the minimum pass, while the US uses a numeric 0โ4.0 scale. A direct letter-for-number mapping would be misleading, so this calculator maps ECTS onto a normalized index: A sits near the top, C in the middle, and E just above the pass line.
Each course is then projected onto the US 4.0 scale and weighted by credit hours. An ECTS A typically converts to a US 3.7โ4.0, a B to around 3.0โ3.3, and a C to roughly 2.0โ2.3, depending on the exact credit weighting.
ECTS to US GPA Reference
| ECTS Grade | US GPA | US Letter |
|---|---|---|
| A (Excellent) | 3.7โ4.0 | A / A- |
| B (Very Good) | 3.0โ3.3 | B / B+ |
| C (Good) | 2.0โ2.3 | C / C+ |
| D (Satisfactory) | 1.0โ1.3 | D |
| E (Sufficient) | 0.0โ1.0 | D- / F |
How UK Honours to GPA Conversion Works
The UK uses percentage bands with different pass lines than the US: a UK pass is 40% (some universities 35%), while a First Class is 70%+. On the US scale, the pass is 1.0 and the top is 4.0. A naive percentage mapping would badly underrate UK grades.
This calculator normalizes each UK mark against the pass-to-top range (35โ100%), then projects onto the 4.0 scale. A First Class (70%+) typically converts to a 3.7โ4.0, a 2:1 (60โ69%) to around 3.3โ3.7, and a 2:2 (50โ59%) to roughly 2.7โ3.0.
UK Honours to US GPA Reference
| UK Classification | Percentage | US GPA |
|---|---|---|
| First Class (1st) | 70%+ | 3.7โ4.0 |
| Upper Second (2:1) | 60โ69% | 3.3โ3.7 |
| Lower Second (2:2) | 50โ59% | 2.7โ3.0 |
| Third Class (3rd) | 40โ49% | 2.0โ2.3 |
| Pass / Ordinary | 35โ39% | 1.0 |
How Percentage to GPA Conversion Works
A raw percentage can't be divided by 25 to get a GPA, because grading systems have different pass lines. A 70% is a First Class in the UK but only a C under Chinese 60%-pass grading. This calculator accounts for the pass line before mapping.
Scores are normalized against the pass-to-top range (60โ100% for Chinese-style grading), then projected onto the 4.0 scale. A 90% typically converts to about 3.7โ4.0, an 80% to around 3.0โ3.3, and a 70% to roughly 2.3โ2.7.
Percentage to GPA Reference
| Percentage | US GPA | US Letter |
|---|---|---|
| 90โ100% | 3.7โ4.0 | A / A- |
| 80โ89% | 3.0โ3.3 | B / B+ |
| 70โ79% | 2.3โ2.7 | C / C+ |
| 60โ69% | 1.0โ2.0 | D |
| Below 60% | 0.0 | F |
FAQ
How is a weighted GPA calculated?
Each course contributes grade ร credit hours. The calculator sums these weighted grades across all courses and divides by the total credit hours, so a 4-credit course counts twice as much as a 2-credit course.
Can I convert a Chinese percentage to a US GPA?
Yes. Select Chinese (0-100) as the From System and US 4.0 GPA as the To System. A Chinese score of 90 maps to roughly a 3.7โ4.0 US GPA because both sit near the top of their own scales once normalized to the pass line.
What is a First Class degree in the UK?
A UK Honours percentage of 70% or above is a First Class (1st). 60โ69% is an Upper Second (2:1), 50โ59% a Lower Second (2:2), and 40โ49% a Third Class.
Is the ECTS grade the same in every European country?
ECTS grades (A to F) are a common reference, but local grading varies. A German 1.0 (sehr gut) and a French 16/20 are both strong grades but use different scales; this tool uses the ECTS AโF letters as the neutral reference.
Does this tool store my data?
No. All calculations run in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or saved anywhere, so it is safe to enter real grades.
Is ECTS the same as GPA?
No. ECTS is the European Credit Transfer System used across the EU, with letter grades AโF. GPA is the US 0โ4.0 scale. They measure the same thing differently, so a conversion is needed when applying to US universities.
What is an ECTS A in US GPA?
An ECTS A (excellent) maps to roughly a 3.7โ4.0 on the US 4.0 scale, because both represent the top of their respective scales.
How do US universities convert ECTS grades?
Most US graduate schools use a credential evaluation or a normalized conversion similar to this calculator: map the European grade to its position on the pass-to-top scale, then project onto 4.0.
Do ECTS credits transfer to US GPA?
ECTS credits describe workload, not performance, so they don't directly affect GPA. Only your grades convert; credits are used here only for weighting.
What is a UK 2:1 in US GPA?
A UK upper second class (2:1, 60โ69%) typically converts to a US GPA of about 3.3โ3.7, roughly a B+ to A- average.
Is a UK First Class equal to a 4.0 GPA?
A First Class Honours (70%+) is the UK's top band and usually converts to a 3.7โ4.0 US GPA, but not always a perfect 4.0 because UK grading rarely awards the theoretical maximum.
How do US universities convert UK Honours degrees?
Graduate schools commonly use a conversion like this one: map the UK classification onto the pass-to-top scale, then project onto 4.0, often via a credential evaluation service.
Does a UK 2:2 convert to a passing US GPA?
A lower second (2:2, 50โ59%) typically maps to around a 2.7โ3.0 US GPA, which is above the US pass line of 1.0 but below the typical 3.0 graduate school cutoff.
How do I convert percentage to GPA 4.0?
Normalize your percentage against the pass line (60% for Chinese-style grading) and top (100%), then project onto 0โ4.0. This calculator does exactly that automatically.
What percentage is a 4.0 GPA?
Under Chinese-style 60%-pass grading, a 4.0 corresponds to 100%, and roughly 90โ95%+ maps to a 3.7โ4.0 A range.
Is 70% a good GPA?
It depends on the grading system. Under Chinese-style grading (pass 60%), 70% is a C, about a 2.3 US GPA. Under UK grading (pass 40%), 70% is a First Class.
Does this work for Indian percentage grades?
Indian universities vary, but many use a 40% pass line. For the most accurate result, use the system whose pass line matches your university and check with your target school.
