How to Build a Conflict-Free Schedule
Most US colleges let you pick your own sections, which means you also have to dodge the time conflicts yourself. This builder turns that trial-and-error into a few clicks: list every course you are considering, check the ones you want, and the weekly grid shows conflicts in red.
- Add each course you are considering with + Add Course. Give it a name and a color.
- For each course, add one time slot, then use the "Copy to" buttons under that slot to copy it to the other days that section meets.
- Check the box next to a course to drop it onto the weekly grid. Uncheck to take it off โ the course stays in your candidate pool so you can try it again later.
- Watch the grid: any slot that overlaps another turns red. Uncheck or move one of the conflicting courses until nothing is red.
- When your schedule is set, click the download icon to export a PNG to keep, or the calendar icon to export an .ics file that pushes the classes into Apple Calendar or Google Calendar.
How Conflict Detection Works
A conflict happens whenever two selected slots fall on the same day and their time ranges overlap even partially โ a class 9:00-10:00 and a lab 9:30-10:30 on the same Monday will be flagged, because you cannot be in both rooms at once.
Checking a course adds all of its slots to the grid at once, because a single section usually meets several times a week (for example, a MWF lecture) and you must attend every session. Unchecking removes all of them together, so you can try a different section without losing your candidate list.
FAQ
One of my courses meets multiple times a week. Do I have to attend all of them?
Yes. In a US-style system a single section usually meets on several days (a MWF lecture, a TR lecture plus a lab). Those slots are one course โ register once, attend all sessions. The "Copy to" buttons under each slot add those linked slots in one click.
What if the same course has several sections at different times?
Treat each section as its own entry in your candidate pool (for example, 'CS 101 - Section 001' and 'CS 101 - Section 003'). Check one and uncheck the other โ the conflict highlight will show if you accidentally keep two that overlap.
What does the .ics export do?
It produces a calendar file that Apple Calendar, Google Calendar, and Outlook can import. Each slot becomes a weekly recurring event for a 16-week term, so your class times show up in the calendar you already use every day.
Does the PNG have a watermark?
Yes. Exported images carry a small 'StudyLify.com' mark in the corner so that when you share your schedule with classmates, others can find the tool too. The on-screen schedule itself has no watermark.
Is my schedule saved anywhere?
No. Everything stays in your browser tab. Refresh the page and your candidate list is gone, so feel free to try many combinations โ nothing is sent to a server.
